Legally Human?
In the USA a child is considered a legal Adult on their 18th Birthday. They are not much different emotionally, mentally or physically then they were the day before, but suddenly on this special day our Government proclaims that they are not fully capable of signing legal documents, buying homes and even going off to war. They can now purchase cigarettes and in some states beer and alcohol.
On this special day they also receive rights independent of their parents rights. They no longer have to have their parent’s permission for a host of decisions that could dramatically effect their lives.
The fact that the Government has proclaimed them Adults, does not always mean that they are in fact Adults.
The Government instills these rights on them, just like they instilled Human rights on them the moment they were born. From birth they are given the right to live. Our laws protect them from being killed or abused. They have rights that include an education, special programs to insure they have food and shelter and medical care all the way up until they turn 18. Food stamp programs, Medicaid and public schools all provided as a right to our children.
The problem is… The government doesn’t always know when that magic moment of maturity happens and they have forgotten our youngest citizens all together.
When does a baby become legally human? Is it when the Government says? Is it at Birth? or Is it at conception?
When should a baby have rights?
